Coming of Age Ceremonies
This is such an important part of being human and so rarely part of what is practiced in modern society. We go through the process of coming of age so many times in life. We know that we are different from that moment on, but it often goes unacknowledged by the world around us.
A coming of age ceremony is a celebration of transition and an empowerment ritual to help us cherish what it is that we are becoming. These can be small ceremonies, even one-on-one, or large ceremonies where many friends and family gather to help celebrate.
Ideal times for Coming of Age Ceremonies are:
- Birth- to bless the child, perhaps presenting them with their first medicine pouch and Power Animal Retrieval. Welcoming them into this world and equipping them with the spiritual protection and guidance to navigate this incarnation.
- Puberty- To honor the transition from childhood into adolescence. This is a powerful, but often confusing time for our youth, when it is so important that we welcome them forward with love and honor. It is a time when a child moves into a place of personal power. With proper guidance our youth can learn to wield that power responsibly.
- Adulthood- Passing from the shelter of the family to an independent life is an exciting phase for us. What a wonderful experience it is to receive blessing for this new independent life but to still receive the rites of passage that keep us anchored to the family and clan that loves us.
- Elderhood- Entering into the role of elder is something that is often avoided by many in our culture. Society often devalues our elders and looks upon them as week. How empowering would it be to honor yourself or a loved one in this sacred passage into being a keeper of wisdom and a hub to the community and clan. This can often include the passing of important myths and stories to keep for the younger generations and the acknowledgment of the family for times when the wisdom of the elder has shined through.
