Adam's Belize Journal- Fall 2005
Wednesday- Nov 30, 2005 - Horseback Riding and
River Tour
Today we had our first introduction to the rainforest and
local river as we went horseback riding and then for a short ride down the river
on a motor boat.
I've been horseback riding many times in my life, but
today's experience was very different. The rainforest is so alive and thick.
Every moment you are so aware of the dark, emerald colors that spread in all
directions. The sunlight streams down through the trees in thin shafts and
everything is moist and alive.

Our guide took us out for a long ride through the forest
and down to the rivers edge where he pointed out that only a few days the river
was 10 feet higher. You could see the evidence of this on the leaves of the
trees that were covered with brown powder from the river mud.
After heading back to the lodge for lunch we headed back
out for a river tour. We hopped into a small motor boat with a wonderful couple
that were staying in the next lodge over. The river was very muddy since it was
the rainy season, so there wasn't much to see in the water itself. We did see
many iguanas sunning themselves in the tree branches and we passed by, and ant nests
that were in the trees as well. The ant nests in Belize are very different than what we
have in the states. The ants there have nests that look like black spheres,
about the size of melons, that hang in the tree limbs- they would be in groups
of about twenty nests in one tree. |
